Discover Amy Stowell’s career journey in the insurance industry, from adjusting medical claims to leading Miscellaneous Professional Liability Claims at Skyward Specialty. Named a 2026 Emerging Leader by APCIA, Amy shares the keys to her success, the lessons that shaped her leadership and her advice for aspiring insurance professionals.
Q1: Tell us about your career journey and what led you to your current role
I began my insurance career immediately out of college in a temporary role adjusting medical claims for a large health insurance company. That quickly turned into a full-time position, where I built a strong foundation in the basics of insurance. About a year later, I transitioned into property and casualty insurance and gradually gained experience across several lines, including no-fault, auto physical damage and liability. In 2007, I started handling agents and brokers errors and omissions liability claims, which I continued to handle for 15 years before joining the Miscellaneous Professional Liability Claims Department at Skyward Specialty.
Q2: What do you believe has been the key to your success and recognition as an emerging leader in the industry?
I believe consistency, accountability and discipline are fundamental to my success. I learned proper claims handling early in my career, which has helped me become an organized and efficient claims adjuster. Any of my peers or managers can look at my work and clearly understand my thought process from claim notice to conclusion. I have had the opportunity to share the knowledge I have attained with less experienced adjusters through formal and informal training programs.
Q3: What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned in your career so far?
Communication skills are extremely important in our business. Setting clear intentions and expectations in a professional manner sets the right tone from the outset. Also, taking responsibility for your work is certainly high on the list. Owning mistakes and learning from those mistakes builds character and ultimately facilitates growth.
Q4: How do you stay up-to-date with industry trends and continue to grow professionally?
I regularly participate in training and webinars, both internally and those conducted by outside counsel, to stay current on trends. I have also had the opportunity to learn from some of the most intelligent individuals throughout my career. Collaboration with leaders, colleagues, outside defense counsel and other industry professionals is key to staying current in our field.
Q5: What advice would you give to others who aspire to become leaders in the insurance industry?
Develop a reputation early on for being dependable. Be sure to follow through on commitments, meet deadlines and communicate honestly. I would also suggest that any young professional view new opportunities as a chance to improve themselves both professionally and personally. Stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t always easy but is typically beneficial in advancing your career.
