My name is Adriana Deak and I’m in insurance.
I’m a senior underwriter specializing in errors and omissions (E&O) coverage in miscellaneous professional liability. I’ve been working in the insurance industry since 2010, starting at 21 years old. I initially entered insurance by chance, as I was looking for an opportunity where I could build a stable career. After realizing how dynamic the field is and how vital insurance is to helping businesses protect themselves against risks, I found my passion in underwriting.
A glimpse into the daily routine
As an underwriter, my main responsibility is to evaluate and assess the risks involved in providing E&O insurance to various businesses. I review applications, verify details and determine the appropriate premiums and coverage limits. A key aspect of my role is working closely with my broker partners to ensure that policies are tailored to meet their clients’ unique needs. I also stay informed on industry trends, including developments in the claims sector and shifts in markets entering or leaving specific business classes.
My typical day starts with reviewing emails that came in overnight, followed by evaluating applications from entities who are first-time buyers of insurance or are looking to find a better match for their coverage needs. I begin by assessing the risks tied to each new submission, ensuring all necessary information is complete and accurate. Next, I move on to the next batch of emails, the majority of which are from brokers and agents seeking clarification or offering additional details. By mid-afternoon and into the evening, I often attend meetings or participate in internal discussions about more complex cases. I really enjoy this part of my job because our team is highly collaborative, with each of us bringing unique experiences from different areas of our careers.
Keys to success for an underwriter
Success in underwriting requires attention to detail, strong analytical abilities and a thorough understanding of risk management. Effective communication is also crucial, especially when explaining complex concepts to brokers. One of the challenges I often encounter is finding the balance between meeting clients’ needs and protecting my company from unnecessary risk. I tackle this challenge by staying informed about industry standards and continuously refining my judgment through experience, ensuring both the client and my company are properly protected.
A significant part of underwriting involves marketing and building strong relationships with partners. Beyond regular phone calls, I make it a point to meet with brokers whenever we can carve out time for lunch. Additionally, attending insurance conferences and broker-sponsored events helps me increase visibility and build stronger connections.
Finding fulfillment through problem-solving
What I enjoy most about my job is the problem-solving aspect – each case is unique, and finding the right solutions to protect entities is incredibly fulfilling. The continuous learning and evolving nature of the insurance industry keeps me motivated and engaged. My advice to anyone interested in underwriting is to embrace the learning curve and develop strong analytical and communication skills. Patience and persistence are key in this field!
Reflecting on my career in insurance, I’m proud of the path I’ve built. It’s been a journey of growth, learning and personal development. I also feel incredibly fortunate for the friends I’ve made along the way. Outside of work, I enjoy bodybuilding – though I no longer compete, I still make time for it in my schedule. I also love spending time with my family and our sweet three-year-old girl. The opportunities within the insurance industry continue to inspire me, and I’m excited to keep growing in this field.
